Startup website cost: what you pay up front and what you pay every year

A website's price is set in three places: how many pages you really need, how much bespoke design, and who maintains it afterwards.

How much does a startup website cost in 2026?

Anywhere from a monthly builder subscription to tens of thousands of dollars for a bespoke agency build. Surmado, which sells a managed website service, puts DIY builders at 17–50 dollars a month, freelancers at 1,500–8,000 dollars one-off and agencies at 6,000–35,000 dollars and up (August 2026), and argues that three-year total cost matters more than the sticker price.

A startup website is also not a generic brochure site. It has to explain a new product, convert paid traffic and survive an investor's scrutiny, so it pays to think in stages rather than page counts.

Four kinds of startup website and what drives their price
Type of siteWhen you need itTypically includesWhat pushes the price up
Validation landing pageIdea stageOne page, one form, trackingPricing tests, variants, email tool integration
Launch siteLaunch and pre-seedHomepage, product, pricing, about, contact, legal pagesCopy written from scratch, product imagery and illustration
Content site in two languagesSeedLaunch site plus blog or resources, use cases, a second languageContent management, translation, technical SEO
Showcase siteFundraising or a major launchBespoke design with motion, 3D, videoCreative design and development hours, performance work

Which pages each stage really needs is covered in startup website structure. If all you need is to test demand, start with a landing page to validate a startup idea: it costs less and teaches you more.

What drives the price of a website?

Mostly design and writing time, more than code. A site with finished copy, few pages and standard components wraps up quickly; one where the message still has to be shaped, an identity designed and product imagery produced takes many more hours, even with the same number of pages.

  • Content: who writes the copy and who produces product images and screenshots.
  • Design: well-crafted standard components or an interface designed from scratch.
  • Content management: if the team needs to publish posts or edit pages itself, a properly configured CMS.
  • Languages: each extra language means reviewed translation, separate URLs and hreflang annotations.
  • Integrations: CRM, newsletter, booking, payments, analytics.
  • Performance: a site that is fast on mobile needs work on images, fonts and code; Google's Core Web Vitals treat main content rendered within 2.5 seconds as good.
  • Technical SEO: structure, structured data, sitemap, linked language versions.

What does a website cost to run after launch?

Small fixed costs, plus variable ones that depend on how hard you push it. The fixed part is domain, hosting and tools; the variable part is content, updates and maintenance.

  • Domain: a yearly renewal whose price depends on the extension and registrar. Register it in the company's name.
  • Hosting: for Next.js sites, platforms such as Vercel offer a free tier, but the Vercel Hobby plan is restricted to personal, non-commercial use; Pro developer seats cost 20 dollars per user per month, before tax.
  • Tools: forms, transactional email, newsletter, analytics, cookie consent.
  • Maintenance: security updates, dependencies, small edits to copy and pages.

91%

of the 11,334 new vulnerabilities found in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025 were in plugins; the total was 42% higher than in 2024Source: Patchstack, State of WordPress Security in 2026

The Patchstack report is not an argument against WordPress: only six issues were reported in its core, all low priority. It is a reminder that every plugin you add is something to keep patched, and that maintenance is a real line in the budget whatever stack you choose.

Builder, template or custom build?

It depends on the stage. To validate an idea, a builder is often right: cheap, and you can change it in an afternoon. Once the site becomes an acquisition channel, with search, paid ads and several languages, a custom build gives you control over speed, structure and content, and frees you from the limits of a theme or a platform.

A practical rule of thumb: if you change the headline more than once a week, stay on a builder; if you are adding languages, publishing content every month and buying traffic, the limits of a builder start costing more than a custom build. Either way, keep the copy and images in a form you can carry over, so the second site does not start from a blank page.

What should you own when you pay for a website?

Everything you would need to switch supplier without starting over. It is the least-read part of a quote and the most expensive one to discover missing.

  1. The domain, registered to the company, with your own access to the registrar account.
  2. Hosting, analytics and tool accounts in the company's name, with the supplier invited as a collaborator.
  3. The source code in a company-owned repository, with deployment instructions.
  4. Design files and images, with usage rights spelled out.
  5. Credentials in a shared password manager, not in email threads.

The contractual side, who owns the code, is a topic of its own: see who owns the code in a software contract. If you are budgeting the product as well, compare this line with MVP development cost and how much it costs to build an app: the website is almost always the smallest part of the spend.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a startup landing page cost?

On a builder, tens of dollars a month. Vendor estimates for a page built by a freelancer or agency range from a few hundred to several thousand, depending on design and features. For a validation test the simplest version is usually enough.

What does a website cost to maintain each year?

Domain, hosting and tools are modest fixed costs. Maintenance varies most: security updates, dependencies and small changes. Ask for it as a separate line on the quote, with what it covers.

Can a startup use free hosting?

It depends on the plan's terms. Vercel's Hobby plan, for example, is free but limited to personal, non-commercial use, so it does not suit a company website. Always read the usage rules before choosing.

Is WordPress a good choice for a startup?

It can be, especially if the team needs to publish a lot of content on its own. The catch is maintenance: every plugin is a component to keep updated. Choose a few reliable plugins and budget for updates.

How long does a startup website take?

It depends mostly on how ready the copy, images and messaging decisions are. A few pages with finished content wrap up far sooner than a site whose positioning is still being worked out. Prepare content in parallel with the build.
